Jeremy Renner is on a roll. The 41-year-old character actor used to languish in smaller supporting roles, but it seems that 2012 is his year. He’s got not one but two big career breakthroughs, in Marvel superhero ensemble “The Avengers”, and this. While the former might have more legs at the Box Office, the Bourne franchise is nothing to sneeze at, with over US$500 million in global earnings. While that had something to do with Matt Damon’s (medium-wattage) star power, it was always the premise that was the true lure for audiences. Troubled, semi-malfunctioning covert operative programmed to kill for country suddenly develops an aversion to all that unpleasant murder business. Renner has the perfect vibe for the role, what with his slightly hangdog quality. It makes him a sympathetic figure, yet he still has that edginess to convince as a man who can suddenly explode into lethal violence.

Also, we have series regular Tony Gilroy behind the camera, who had a hand in writing previous instalments. “The Bourne Legacy” seems to be going to great lengths to maintain links to the Matt Damon films, with certain key players like Albert Finney, Joan Allen and Scott Glenn returning. As for new faces, Edward Norton is always a welcome addition to any cast, and it’ll be interesting to see how his character plays out against Renner. This teaser doesn’t reveal very much, but what little we’re shown is quite promising. Consider me pumped for this one…

“The Bourne Legacy” also stars Rachel Weisz, Stacy Keach, and Oscar Isaac. It premieres 3rd August.
