Oscars 2012 Winners List & Image Gallery
Yawn. That was largely Electroshadow’s reaction to the Oscars this year. The indignation at several underserving and outright baffling nominations/omissions has given way to indifference. And last night’s broadcast did little to change the feeling that the Oscars is slowly becoming a waste of the film lover’s time. Except for the crafting categories, perhaps, where true artistry still is rewarded accordingly. I can’t say enough about the beauty of a film like “Hugo”, so its wins in categories like Art Direction and Sound is justly earned (although there were better efforts in the Visual Effects category this year). And “The Iron Lady” had the best, most convincing make-up of any film I’ve seen of the nominated bunch, so that one is spot on too. Also, I’m glad to see “Midnight In Paris” getting the Best Original Screenplay Oscar. It really is a delight, and if you haven’t watched it, you simply must.
On the flipside, the boring side of the Academy Awards quickly set in, when “The Artist” started sweeping pretty much every category it was nominated in. That’s not to say the film does not deserve it, but anyone could see this coming a mile away. Frankly, George Clooney was robbed. Small consolation for “The Descendants” came in its Best Adapted Screenplay win. As for the show itself, Sacha Baron Cohen’s much talked about “banned” publicity stunt did indeed happen after all, to absolutely no one’s surprise. Even Will Ferrell’s admittedly amusing stunt of clashing a cymbal in the faces of Brangenlina felt staged. That’s how contrived and predictable the Oscars have become. Billy Crystal’s classy hosting did little to lift the general feeling of gloom that people just don’t really care as much as the organisers (and advertisers) hope for them to. Maybe they should feature more cute doggies at the show, as Uggie from “The Artist” proved to be one of the few genuinely charming moments. Other than that, I believe the one word that best sums it up is: Whatever. Anyway, here’s the full list of nominees, with winners in orange.
