Will Ferrell is something of an acquired taste. For me, at least. I find his brand of humour to be best taken in small doses. To be fair, when he’s funny, he’s funny. Case in point, “Anchorman” and “The Other Guys”. I find that the person Ferrell’s paired up with makes a difference in how he comes off onscreen. So it’s a good sign that in his latest comedy “The Campaign” he’s got Zach Galifianakis. Now, this fella is also pretty hit and miss, especially since his weirdness can be puzzling/annoying rather than funny. But it just seems like a good combo. And Ferrell is right at home playing a sleazy politician, having done George W Bush parodies on TV’s “Saturday Night Live”. Galifianakis looks hilarious as a slightly campy — and clueless — candidate, and the guys have got chemistry together. Could this be the start of a new teamup? Check out this trailer for an idea…

Here’s the official synopsis: “When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there’s room to dig a whole lot deeper.”

“The Campaign” is directed by Jay Roach and also stars Jason Sudeikis, Katherine LaNasa, Dylan McDermott, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd, and Brian Cox. It premieres 10th August in the US. No word on a local release yet.
