If there’s one thing you can count on in a Baz Luhrmann film, it’s stunning visuals. As a narrative storyteller he sometimes stumbles but as a visual one, he has few equals. This trailer sure proves that, and more. The word is WOW. The fashions, the set design, the whole look & feel of 1920s New York that Luhrmann has crafted here is simply gorgeous. And his cast has never looked better, with Leonardo DiCaprio, playing the title role, in debonair, pure movie star form. I’ve always had a little crush on Carey Mulligan, and she is quite lovely in this. Another thing about the director is that he really knows how to film his leading ladies, giving them an almost luminous quality (eg: Nicole Kidman in “Moulin Rouge!”). It’s a bit strange to see Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan here though. But I’m sure it’ll make sense in the context of the story, of which we’re given very little. Consider me highly intrigued for this film now…

Here’s the official synopsis: “The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.”

“The Great Gatsby” also stars Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki. It premieres 25th December in the US. No word on a local release yet.
