It’s a little surprising that Hollywood has embarked on a big screen remake of “Les Miserables” so soon after the Liam Neeson version from 1998. Then again, that film didn’t exactly set the Box Office alight. So here we are in 2012 with a brand new version directed by Tom Hooper, who last gave us the Oscar-winning “The King’s Speech”. This one is a much bigger-budgeted affair, especially in its cast. We’ve got A-listers Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe playing opposite each other. Plus Anne Hathaway, who from this teaser, seems to have quite an impressive singing voice. Looks lavish and epic in scope, but can it overcome the stage-bound feel of most theatre-to-cinema adaptations? Maybe this time they’re being more faithful to Victor Hugo’s book, which should provide some powerful thematic drive…

Here’s the official synopsis: “Les Miserables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, the film tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.”

“Les Miserables” also stars Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit and Samantha Barks. It premieres 14th December.

Les Miz has some of the best songs ever written for a musical. And hands down my favorite musical of all. I can’t wait to see this on screen. I’m a little surprised that Anne Hathaway is playing Fantine. I thought she’d have taken the younger roles. She’s an impressive sounding singer, though upon second listen she doesn’t seem to have the vocal strength for I Dreamed A Dream. I’m interested to see how Russel Crowe fares as a singer though. Because the Javert songs are NOT easy.

gwen10: To be honest, I don’t know much about the stage musical but I do like the songs that I’ve heard from it, like “I Dreamed A Dream”. I’ve got Susan Boyle to thank for that, though. And somehow I just cannot picture Russell Crowe singing, well or otherwise. Sorry, mental block.
