This year hasn’t seen very many decent horror films. While the annoyingly overused found footage style continues to ruin the genre, scaring people the old fashioned way seems to be all the more precious and difficult to come by. “Sinister” is one of those, and ironically, it’s from the makers of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. In fact, it seems to be subverting “found footage” as the literal source of the horror — in this case, old 8mm home movies. The tone is effectively creepy, with a couple of sly jump scares. Ethan Hawke looks suitably on edge as the father who unwittingly plunges his family into a nightmare scenario. This looks like it has potential…

Here’s the official synopsis: “Sinister is a frightening new thriller from the producer of the “Paranormal Activity” films and the writer-director of “The Exorcism of Emily Roses.” Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.”

“Sinister” also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, James Ransone, Fred Dalton Thompson, Nicholas King, Clare Foley, Victoria Leigh, Juliet Rylance, Michael Hall D’Addario. It premieres 5th October in the US.

for a person who thought insidious wasn’t scary, I must say this looks promising indeed…. reminds me a bit of the thai horror flick, Shutter, but of course it’s a whole new story line altogether… This is definitely in my “to-watch list”

e-Lena: I found “Insidious” quite an effective horror flick. “Shutter” on the other hand, relied way too much on a killer twist. The rest of it wasn’t very scary.
