Rian Johnson is only on his third feature film but he is already one of my favourite up & coming young directors, along with guys like Neill Blomkamp (“District 9″) and Duncan Jones (“Moon”). Unlike those two, Johnson hasn’t ventured into sci-fi until now. But what a bold step he’s taken. From just the brief bits of footage revealed so far, “Looper” is showing a lot of promise. Now, here comes a brand new trailer, and this one amps up the sense of style, action, and a woozy vision of time travel that is all Johnson’s. I still don’t think the prosthetic makeup on Joseph Gordon-Levitt is necessary, because judging by his performance here, he has really captured the mannerisms and speech patterns of Bruce Willis. Also, I don’t know about you but I’m catching a slight whiff of “Inception” in some of the scenes. Doesn’t mean it’s not original though. September can’t get here fast enough!
Here’s the synopsis: “In the futuristic action thriller “Looper,” time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.”
“Looper” premieres 28th September.
