Director Guillermo del Toro bowed out of making “The Hobbit”, which has worked out pretty well in the end. Peter Jackson got to take back his baby, and del Toro is now on an original project that’s been getting geeks excited: “Pacific Rim”. Perhaps there might still be some traces of competitiveness between the two directors, for no sooner than Jackson debuted a poster for the upcoming San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) did del Toro do the same with his movie.

Check out this first-ever glimpse of a giant robot in his giant robots vs. giant alien monsters sci-fi actioner. Now this comes as a bit of a surprise. I didn’t think the robots would be THAT big. The thing looks about the size of a skyscraper! Still, if you’re going to do a blockbuster with such a larger-than-life concept, might as well take it all the way. This is shaping up quite nicely…

Here’s an official description of what the movie is about: “In the film, legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”

“Pacific Rim” stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff. It premieres 12th July 2013, and its Comic-Con panel is next Saturday, 14th July.
