To borrow a “Star Wars” catchphrase, I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
Ever since rumours of what the new Iron Man armour would look like cropped up online, I’ve been hoping that they would remain just rumours. Then last week, a piece of official concept art surfaced (first pic below), which seemed to confirm those rumours: the armour would be largely gold, a la the “Bleeding Edge” design from the comics. Then yesterday at the annual San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), Marvel Studios officially unveiled a life-sized replica of Tony Stark’s latest Mark (probably Mark VIII). And in my humble opinion, it is crap. I mean, what the hell is with all that gold/yellow? The form of the armour itself is alright, to be fair. It’s just the horrendous colour scheme. It just makes him look like a cheap toy. And I’m not alone in feeling this way. Since the armour debuted, fans have generally been pretty vocal in their dislike for it. The stink has gotten so bad that director Shane Black had to address it in the “Iron Man 3″ press conference at the famous Hall H yesterday. He said: “I mean, of all the things in the world to be getting angry about?” Well, Shane, maybe it’s because the fans have a valid grouse? Hopefully, this armour will be a stepping stone to somethign better, just like the suitcase Mark V gave way to the Mark VI in “Iron Man 2″ and “The Avengers”.
What do you think? Cool all-gold look that would make a great Chinese New Year ornament, or a total mistake?
Here’s a brief rundown of the project: “Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Iron Man 3″ returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Iron Man 2″) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2″) as Happy Hogan. “Iron Man 3″ continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka Iron Man.”
“Iron Man 3″ premieres 3rd May 2013.
