The Doubting Thomases and Negative Nancys have been noticeably quiet today. Because this teaser trailer has countered much of the criticism that this prequel is a cheap, cheesy, and made-for-TV-ish hack job. Hey, it may very well be, but based on this trailer, it sure feels like a thrilling, smart and epic film. What’s gotten my attention is the intellectual and ideological sparring between Charles Xavier and his best pal Erik Lensherr. That truly is the heart and soul of the beginnings of the whole X-Men mythos, and director Matthew Vaughn seems to be paying it due attention.
Also, I’m loving the interweaving with actual historical events like the Cuban Missile Crisis of the Kennedy-Castro era. It gives a real sense of place and occasion to the whole story. There are a few things I’m not so sure about though. Like certain character designs. Watch this trailer and be the judge. Comment away!
“X-Men: First Class” premieres 3rd June.
