I got excited when I heard Weta Digital was handling the visual effects for this. It’s probably the only thing to be hopeful for, since “Rise” is yet another needless reboot/prequel, this time to the highly-regarded “Apes” cult films of the late 60s/early 70s.

The producers seem to know this, and they’ve wisely (or worryingly?) marketed Weta’s involvement up front in this teaser. To be fair, this has some very solid actors like James Franco, Brian Cox and Freida Pinto. And not forgetting the always excellent Andy Serkis in a performance capture as Caesar, the ape who gains super-intelligence after a genetic experiment. The teaser doesn’t show much of the apes, but does set up the premise quite clearly. There’s a certain creepy vibe that I hope carries through into the finished film…
