Every once in a while, an independent film comes along and takes everyone by surprise with its sheer quality. “Another Earth” is one such example. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews, with some critics calling it “science-fiction at its best”. Dealing with the idea of parallel realities, its simple, personal storytelling approach slowly reveals some very big philosophical and emotional themes. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, William Mapother is actually Tom Cruise’s cousin.

Here’s the official synopsis: “In Another Earth, Rhoda Williams (Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.”

“Another Earth” premieres 20th July in selected theatres in the US. Look for it on DVD here.

Looks good. It’s been a banner year so far for good (if not $ucceSSful) sci-fi films after The Adjustment Bureau and The Source Code.
