This is definitely good news.

Quentin Tarantino’s next film, “Django Unchained” just acquired some serious A-List thespian firepower. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx will be playing the leading men in this period tale of revenge. DiCaprio, who has been nominated for an Oscar and has won a couple of acting honours including the Golden Globe, will be playing the villain Calvin Candie. Interesting name, huh. Candie is a nasty plantation owner with a penchant for torturing and murdering his slaves. Tarantino has said that his film will deal with America’s dark past with slavery in a frank yet unexpected way. The casting of DiCaprio is certainly a left-field choice for a role like this. Knowing the director, he’ll probably wring a refreshing performance out of the “Inception” star.

Deadline today announced that Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) has just been added to the cast. I am SO glad it is not Will Smith, as previously rumoured. I like Foxx. He’s a versatile actor who can bring the laughs as easily as the pathos. With Smith, there’s always that slightly self-satisfied air that detracts from my immersion into whatever movie where he’s the star. Foxx will be playing the title role of Django, a freed slave who goes after Candie with a vengeance. On the way, he teams up with a bounty hunter to help him on his quest. The mercenary will be played by another Oscar-winning actor, Christoph Waltz, who was absolutely brilliant in “Inglourious Basterds”. I’m pretty excited about this cast. And with Tarantino at the helm, this could well be another acting tour de force for all involved. Not to mention a kick-ass ride.
