Hollywood’s plundering of the comic book world continues. Variety today reported that Universal Studios has just secured the rights to a graphic novel called “2 Guns”, a crime noir thriller. A director and star are already in final negotiations for this project. Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur is the man to helm it, and he is likely to reteam with the star of his latest film “Contraband” (out in January), Mark Wahlberg.

Here’s how the comic is described: “The film, based on the graphic novel by Steven Grant and published by BOOM! Studios features a script by Blake Masters and David O. Russell. It tells a pulp story of cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. In the graphic novel, Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score – considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s got his own secret and isn’t who he appears to be.”

It sounds like “Sin City” lite to me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Pulp crime is hard to pull off without coming across cheesy. It’s all about the tone. It’s still too early to tell what the filmmakers are going for, so more updates when Electroshadow gets them…
