When the producers of the Bond franchise reinvented the world-famous spy in a more realistic, gritty manner a la Jason Bourne, one the things they consciously left out was the character of Q. Short for Quartermaster, MI6′s resident gadget expert was seen as too gimmicky. After 2 oh-so-serious Bond films however, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson decided that it’s okay to bring Q back. And he’s going to be played by a much younger actor than the one & only Desmond Llewelyn (bless his soul). Or John Cleese in some of the later Pierce Brosnan flicks.

Yesterday, Variety broke the news that British actor Ben Whishaw (“Perfume”) would be taking on the iconic role. Whishaw is only 31, which makes him significantly younger than the current Bond as well, since Daniel Craig is 43. It will certainly change the dynamic of their on-screen relationship. No more disapproving uncle stuff. Only time will tell exactly what director Sam Mendes has up his sleeve for the lovable Applied Sciences division head. The 23rd James Bond film also stars Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Helen McCrory and Ola Rapace. Oh, and btw, the clapperbaord pic above is from the production’s official Twitter account, showing the 10th day of the shoot.

“Skyfall” premieres 9th November 2012.
