Director Gore Verbinski has quite an body of work. He’s of course most well-known for his “Pirates Of The Caribbean” movies, and the disastrous “Lone Ranger” reboot, but he also did the delightfully odd “Rango”, a surprisingly solid remake of J-horror “The Ring”, and the Nic Cage drama “The Weather Man”. Now, he’s back to his off-kilter ways with “A Cure For Wellness”, which is a psychological thriller that veers close to horror. Dane DeHaan stars as a man who visits a health spa with rather dark secrets behind its supposedly miracle treatments. The first footage is out, and it sure sells the creepy vibe, while the Japanese trailer goes even more surreal. Shades of “Jacob’s Ladder” and prime David Lynch here. I like.
And here’s the ever-so-slightly NSFW international trailer…
Here’s the official summary: “Directed by Gore Verbinski (The Ring) and scripted by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road, The Lone Ranger), A Cure for Wellness stars Dane DeHaan as an ambitious young executive who is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.”
“A Cure For Wellness” also stars Jason Isaacs (the “Harry Potter” series) and Mia Goth (“The Survivalist”). It premieres 17th February 2017.
