Hmmm. I’m not sure what to think of “Alien: Covenant” now. I liked it better when I thought it would be a proper follow-up to “Prometheus” that perhaps bridged (at least some of) the gap to “Alien”. But with this new trailer, I’m getting the uncomfortable feeling that Ridley Scott is just re-treading old ground. This basically looks like a rehash of his 1979 classic. For all its flaws, “Prometheus” was trying to expand the mythology in lateral ways and tell different types of stories. Of course, this being Ridley at the helm, it all looks gorgeous. But I just hope I’m wrong and the studio is hiding the true surprises. They’ve already revealed the new Xenomorph, and to be honest it’s a weaker variation of the iconic HR Giger design.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.”
“Alien: Covenant” is written by Jack Paglen (“Transcendence”) and Michael Green (“Green Lantern”), and stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco. It premieres 19th May.
