You gotta give credit to Tom Cruise for his career choices. The guy isn’t content to just (pardon the pun) cruise along doing paycheque movies where he is the action hero. He does try different things across different genres, and that’s part of the reason for his staying power in Hollywood. Cruise’s latest project sees him re-teaming with his “Edge Of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman.
“American Made” is based on a true story, about a civilian pilot who gets roped in by the CIA to do some shady runs bringing firearms and drugs into South America. Cruise looks like he’s having a blast playing a morally dubious character, and co-star Domhnall Gleeson also appears to be bringing his A-game. I like the sense of energy that Liman is infusing into what could easily be a run-of-the-mill cautionary tale. Could be good.
Here’s the plot summary: “American Made is based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of Barry Seal, a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history.”
“American Made” also stars Domhnall Gleeson (The Revenant, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Sarah Wright (Parks and Recreation, Marry Me), E. Roger Mitchell (Flight, The Equalizer), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo), Lola Kirke (Gone Girl, Mistress America), Alejandro Edda (Fear the Walking Dead, The Bridge), Benito Martinez (How to Get Away with Murder, American Crime), Caleb Landry Jones (Get Out, X-Men: First Class) and Jayma Mays (Glee, The League). It premieres 29th September.
