Anne Hathaway is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having most recently starred met recently in Chris Nolan’s “Interstellar”. Now, the Oscar winner’s giving it another go, but in a more specific area of the genre, the giant monster movie. Today, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Hathaway has signed on for a rather unusual project named “Colossal”.

It’s to be helmed by Spanish cult director Nacho Vigalondo who gave us the brilliant time-travel flick “Timecrimes”. The film is being described as “Godzilla” meets “Lost In Translation”, which is a pretty eclectic mix if you ask me.

Here’s the synopsis for Colossal: “Gloria (Hathaway) is an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.”

Vigalondo commented: “‘Colossal’ is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”

Nicolas Chartier, CEO of Voltage Pictures who is handling production, added: “As huge fans of ‘Timecrimes,’ we are thrilled to be collaborating with a filmmaker as talented as Nacho. He has written an extraordinarily unique piece of material and we look forward to seeing Anne in such a challenging role.”

Voltage will be looking for distribution at the upcoming Cannes Film Frestival. I loved “Timecrimes” so I’m pretty curious as to what this film is like. We’ll keep you updated as the updates come in…
