Many fans balked at the mere idea of a sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 sci-fi “Blade Runner”. But when I heard it was director Denis Villeneuve at the helm, I knew this had a real chance of being good. Heck, even great. A teaser debuted today, and it sure looks like the French-Canadian filmmaker behind films like “Sicario” and “Prisoners” has nailed the tone and the look of the world.
Am not too sold on Ryan Gosling in the lead role, but I’m definitely giving him the benefit of the doubt after impressing turns in “The Nice Guys” and “La La Land”. As for the original lead, Harrison Ford, it seems as though the Replicant theory has been thrown out the window, since this is set 30 years after the first film and Replicants only have a 5-year lifespan. Or is he not the Deckard from that film?
Here’s the official synopsis: “Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”
“Blade Runner 2049” is scripted by Michael Green (Logan, Alien: Covenant) and Hampton Fancher (the original Blade Runner) with cinematography by the Oscar-nominated Roger Deakins, the cast includes Mackenzie Davis, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Carla Juri, Barkhad Abdi, and Robin Wright. Blade Runner 2049 opens October 6, 2017.
