Of all the sports rivalries throughout history, one of the most memorable has to between the tennis pros American “Superbrat” John McEnroe and icy-cool Swede Bjorn Borg. In the 80s, they were both at the height of their powers and of their intense rivalry, which is exemplified in an epic showdown at the 1980 Wimbledon Final. It’s been the subject of many a documentary and sports programme, but this is the first time we’re getting a full-on feature film treatment.
“Borg/McEnroe” is a Swedish-made effort starring Shia LaBeouf (“Fury”) and Sverrir Gudnason (“Gentlemen”) which focuses on the men behind the legends, while recreating that iconic match. A teaser just dropped, and although most of it is in Swedish, it’s visually-driven so you get the gist of it. It’s uncanny how much Gudnason resembles Borg, but LaBeouf looks nothing like McEnroe. I guess they hired him for his intensity/craziness. Can’t wait for this, assuming it ever makes it to our screens.
Here’s the official synopsis “Borg/McEnroe is a film about one of the world’s greatest icons Björn Borg (Gudnason) and his biggest rival, the young and talented John McEnroe (LaBeouf) and their legendary duel during the 1980 Wimbledon tournament. It’s a story about two men that became legends and the price they had to pay.”
“Borg/McEnroe” is directed by Janus Metz Pedersen (True Detective, Armadillo) from a screenplay by Ronnie Sandahl (Underdog), and also stars Stellan Skarsgård (The Avengers). It doesn’t have a release date yet, but is set to open in Norway, Sweden and the UK in September and Germany in October.
