I don’t have much hope for “Cars 3” to be any good. It’s always been the worst of the Pixar stable, but the franchise does have a following in the millions of little boys around the world who adore Lightning McQueen and the colourful world he inhabits.
Today, a new trailer premiered (called a sneak peek by the studio), and while it looks like we’ll be getting more of the same, I do get the feeling they’re trying something new. There’s this hint of the has-been athlete trying to make it back on top, while facing a younger, more powerful adversary. In other words, they might be making a (latter-day) Rocky Balboa movie. Nah, just kidding. But yeah, there’s definitely the hint of a sports movie in here…
Here’s the official synopsis: “Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist for Cars and Cars 2), Disney-Pixar‘s Cars 3 begins when, blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!”
“Cars 3” also features the return of Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Bonnie Hunt as Sally Carrera, and Cheech Marin as Ramone. There’s also some brand new characters, including Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer) and Cruz Ramirez (voiced by Cristela Alonzo). It premieres 16th June.
