Anyone here remember “Splash”? It was that 1984 Ron Howard movie where Daryl Hannah played a mermaid, and Tom Hanks her love interest. Well, Walt Disney Pictures is revisiting the film in an update. And boy, do they mean update.

For the remake, there’s gonna be a big twist to the premise. Channing Tatum has signed on to star… and he’s not playing the Hanks role, but the mermaid role. Well, technically, that makes him a merMAN. Those wacky Disney execs. Whatever will they think of next? A schlubby woman in the Tom Hanks role? Why, yes. That would be Jillian Bell, who’s worked with Tatum before on “22 Jump Street”.

The original was about a young boy who is saved from drowning by a mermaid. She returns 20 years later and gives the now grown-up boy the option between his life on land or a life under the sea with her.

“Splash” will be written by Marja-Lewis Ryan, while Ron Howard will serve as producer along with his partner Brian Grazer will produce. Tatum is also taking on a producing role.

Tell me this is a joke. Better be. I just watched splash and can only wonder why youd wanna remake it just to kill it like they did it to new ghostbusters?
