The first “Despicable Me” was a pleasant experience, with a fun concept and solid jokes carried by the capable voice cast. The follow-up was okay, another case of diminishing returns. But the folks at Illumination and Universal still think the franchise has legs for a 3rd movie. Based on this trailer, I’d say there’s just about enough fuel in the tank to maybe last one more full-length feature. But at this point they really are starting to push it. The new baddie seems fascinating enough, though. And the Minions are always awesome in measured doses.

Here’s the official summary”Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker (co-creator of Comedy Central’s global phenomenon South Park and the Broadway smash The Book of Mormon) joins the Despicable Me 3 voice cast as the film’s villain, Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s. He proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date. The animated film is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and executive produced by Chris Renaud.”

“Despicable Me 3” is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, co-directed by Eric Guillon, and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Dario, and sees the return of Gru (Steve Carell), Lucy (Kristen Wiig), Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Nev Scharrel). It premieres 30th June 2017.
