Well, this is a surprise. A fun one too. Looks like Ivan Drago/He-Man/Universal Soldier/Expendable will be taking a dip in the waters of the DCEU.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, veteran Swedish action star Dolph Lundgren has signed up as a cast member for the James Wan-directed DC superhero movie. He will play “King Nereus of the aquatic kingdom of Xebel, who claims Mera as his own and wants to kill Aquaman.” How big the role is is still unknown at this point.
Not being too familiar with Aquaman lore, I admit I’ve never heard of this character. But he is apparently a relatively new creation. Nereus’ first appearance was in Aquaman #19 (April, 2013) by Geoff Johns and Paul Pelletier. Johns is also the creative steward for the DCEU right now.
Lindgren may not be a good actor by any stretch of the imagination, but the guy has always been a fascinating presence on the big screen. Also, what he lacks in acting chops, he more than makes up for in actual smarts. Lundgren has a degree in chemistry from Washington State University, a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney. Quite an accomplished academician, a fact they made fun of in “The Expendables 2”.
“Aquaman” has shaped up to have a kick-ass and very eclectic cast, with Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Aquaman’s father, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s brother, Orm (aka Ocean Master), with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Willem Dafoe as Vulko.
