Paramount Pictures is remaking the cheesy 90s TV series “Baywatch” as a movie, but so far we’ve no idea whether it’ll be a serious actioner or a let’s-poke-fun-at-ourselves comedy. Or a little bit of both. Leading man Dwayne Johnson has proven that he does have comedic chops, as does his co-star Zac Efron (“Neighbors”), so if the studio is smart they’ll play up the campier aspects of the show.
Johnson took to social media and posted the first pics on the set, along with a comment that hints at this being less than serious: “My character “Mitch Buchannon” just gave Zac Efron’s character “Matt Brody” the all important beach speech about what it means to have manly “Alpha balls”. Zac’s ad-libbed responses were brilliant! Talented and great dude. World get ready to have some fun, ’cause the beach will never be the same again.”
Efron replied: “First day protecting the bay is a wrap. Thanks to the big guy (Dwayne). Stay tuned. More adventures lie ahead.”
Looks like these guys are having fun. Hopefully, it translates into something fun for us viewers. Right now, the only red flag is that the script is written by the guys behind the unwatchable “Friday The 13th” remake, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.
“Baywatch” is directed by Seth Gordon (“Horrible Bosses”) and stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra and Hannibal Buress. It premieres 19th May 2017.
