Somewhere out there, David Hasselhoff is weeping.
For the “Baywatch” big screen remake Paramount Pictures has been threatening us with has found its leading man. And it is someone more Alpha than The Hoff, that mountain of testosterone The Rock. Pray that this is going to be a comedy.
To be fair though, Johnson does have a comedic flair and a healthy sense of self awareness. So should the studio go the satirical “21 Jump Street” route taken by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, this could turn out to be comedy gold. If only. Anyway, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that not only had Paramount signed Johnson on for the leading role, they’ve also secured a directing team of Sean Anders and John Morris (“We’re the Millers”), with Justin Malen to rewrite the screenplay (previously written by Jeremy Garelick and Peter Tolan).
The previous version of the script was indeed pretty comedy-heavy, with few ties to the original TV series. With this current line-up, it’s unknown if the approach will remain, or if previously involved original cast members Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson set to reprise their roles. Heck why do we need them anymore when we’ve now got The Rock, who will just punch the ocean and save drowning victims.
