Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films (via director James Wan) have revealed the first photo of Amber Heard’s Mera in full costume for the upcoming Aquaman movie.

Amber Heard received a lot of negative attention over her acrimonious divorce from Johnny Depp. That got Warner Bros. executives kind of nervous, as she was starring in a DCEU movie, “Aquaman”, and we all know how much of a bad rep the DCEU has suffered already. There were rumours that she’d be dropped from the James Wan-directed movie, but all that has clearly been disproved with a new batch of pics. Today, DC Films and Wan himself revealed Heard in full costume as Mera, Aquaman’s love interest and the future First Lady of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. And at a glance, it’s obvious that Wan has embraced the movie’s comicbook roots. Look at that cleavage!

It’s not just the design either, it’s the bright green and gold colours that signifies Wan is going for a rather vivid visual experience. Of course, the colours could be toned down in post-production, but somehow I doubt it. Contrast the first two images with the third one, which is actually from Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”. Vera’s look is far more muted, and the suit design is much more battle armour-like. I think both looks work, for different reasons.

Here’s some info on the film (via Comingsoon): “An icon for over 75 years, Aquaman is known by fans of DC Comics as the ruler of Atlantis but committed to protecting the entire globe, both land and sea. Shooting is currently underway on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, with extensive filming to be accomplished at Village Roadshow Studios. Filming will also take place in Newfoundland, Sicily and Tunisia.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan from a script by Will Beall, Geoff Johns and Wan, and also stars Jason Momoa in the title role, Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man 2) as Vulko; Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, Green Lantern) as Tom Curry; Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables films) as Nereus; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (upcoming Baywatch, Netflix’s The Get Down) as Black Manta; Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) as Murk; with Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring films, Watchmen) as Orm/Ocean Master; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Lion) as Atlanna. It premieres 21st December 2018.
