“Mary Poppins Returns” is a sequel that comes more than 40 years after the original, starring Julie Andrews. Is it too late? Normally, the answer would be yes, but this one has a whole slew of talent both behind and in front of the camera that just might make it a worthy follow-up. It’s got Emily Blunt n the title role, so that’s a big plus to start with.

For anyone wondering how she’ll look in the role, wonder no more. Now filming in London, Walt Disney Pictures has just released the very first image of Blunt in full costume, standing outside the Banks family home. Looks like her wardrobe has been given a boost of colour. Pretty promising so far…

Here’s the accompanying caption for the pic: “Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to the Banks home after many years and uses her magical skills to help the now grown up Michael and Jane rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”

Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels), Mary Poppins Returnsis drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).”

“Mary Poppins Returns” is directed and produced by Rob Marshall (“Chicago”), and stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana), Ben Whishaw (SPECTRE), Emily Mortimer (Hugo) and Julie Walters (Harry Potter films) with Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). In addition, Dick Van Dyke plays Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, which is now run by William Weatherall Wilkins (Firth), and Angela Lansbury will play the Balloon Lady, a character from PL Travers’ original children’s books. The film also introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Nathanael Saleh (Game of Thrones) and newcomer Joel Dawson. It premieres 25th December 2018.
