It’s pretty safe to say that director Darren Aronofsky doesn’t make happy, feel-good movies. The closest I’d say he’s ever come is “The Fountain” and even then that’s one divisive film. From “Requiem For A Dream” to “Black Swan”, the guy is interested in the darker aspects of humanity.
So while his latest, titled “mother!” (lower case ‘m’ intentional), has no story details yet, you can be sure that it’s not gonna be suitable for future Mother’s Day viewings. The plot is said to centre on a couple whose relationship is challenged with the arrival of some uninvited guests. Today, the very first imagery related to the film was released online, and it’s not for the faint-hearted.
Paramount Pictures debuted a stylish poster design with artwork by James Jean. Beautifully painted, it features Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence (“Silver Linings Playbook”) in a thematically (if not literally) gory moment. You don’t see these kinds of posters anymore, do you?
The impressive cast of mother! also stars Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall), Michelle Pfeiffer (What Lies Beneath, Dark Shadows), Ed Harris (Snowpiercer, A Beautiful Mind) and Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and his brother, Brian Gleeson (Snow White and the Huntsman, Assassin’s Creed).
“mother!” is written, produced, and directed by Aronofsky through his own Protozoa Pictures along with Scott Franklin and Ari Handel. It premieres 13th October in the US, just in time for Halloween.
