It seems like Robert De Niro’s latter-day career is going to comprise largely of comedies. This is an actor who built a name for gritty, hard-edged crime films. But at least the guy is still trying, unlike many veteran stars who just phone in their performances purely for the paycheque (example: Bruce Willis).
De Niro’s latest comedy (from Lionsgate) is way raunchier than usual. It’s called “Dirty Grandpa” and he’s co-starring with Zac Efron. Today, we have our first look via Entertainment Weekly at the two leads in the film, which is described like this: “The film follows an uptight guy named Jason Kelly (Efron) who, right before his wedding, is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed, former Army general grandfather Dick (De Niro) to Florida for spring break.”
Shades of Johnny Knoxville’s “Bad Grandpa” here, no? Well, as long as it’s funny, I’m game.
“Dirty Grandpa” is directed by Dan Mazer (I Give It a Year) from a script by John Phillips, and stars Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages), Aubrey Plaza (The To-Do List), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy), Jason Mantzoukas (“The League”), Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”) and Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf of Wall Street). It premieres 22nd January 2016 in the US.
