See, this is why Electroshadow doesn’t post news until it’s confirmed.

Earlier this month, it was reported that director Matt Reeves (“Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes”) was set to take over the helm of “The Batman” when Ben Affleck dropped out. Then, word came out that negotiations had fallen apart and Reeves was off. Naturally, half the internet, including major sites like Collider, quickly jumped on it as “news”. People got into a frenzy, raging that the studio was screwing things up yet again, that the DCEU was doomed, etc etc etc. Nope. Turns out that was nothing more than a storm in a teacup.

Today, Warner Bros officially announced that Reeves will direct and produce “The Batman”.

Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group issued a comment: “We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”

Now, does this mean that talks between the director and the studio never broke down? Not at all. But that also didn’t mean Reeves had said no in the first place. As is normally the case with these showbiz deals, there is a lot to go through and agree on before signing on the dotted line. Basically, most sites just jumped to conclusions.

Reeves himself said: “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

I think Reeves is a good director, though he isn’t entirely consistent. I still would’ve liked to have seen Affleck’s version, but as far as “name” directors go, Reeves is a solid choice. Oh, and for anyone still in the business of speculation, Ben Affleck is still playing the Caped Crusader. And until otherwise (officially) stated, that’s the status we’re sticking with.

“The Batman” stars Ben Affleck, Joe Manganiello, Jeremy Irons, and J.K. Simmons. No official release date has been set yet, but expect an announcement soon.
