Ben Affleck’s latest film “Live By Night” (where he both directs and stars) has been screened for critics, but an embargo has been put in place, so we don’t know if it’s any good. Word through the grapevine is that it’s not quite the masterpiece some have been anticipating. I still wanna remain optimistic though, as he’s proven to be a talented filmmaker.
Since they can’t talk about the film, Warner Bros. Pictures has decided to put out a new poster instead. And I dig it. The seated pose harkens back to the gangster movies of old, like “Scarface” (the 1932 one) and “The Godfather”. Some still aren’t convinced about Affleck in the role, but the guy does look pretty dapper here, no? And that tagline suggests this will be a cautionary tale.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Live by Night is set in the roaring ’20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.
An adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s 2012 prohibition era thriller, Affleck directs and stars alongside Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Brendan Gleeson (In the Heart of the Sea, the Harry Potter films), Chris Messina (Argo, The Mindy Project), Sienna Miller (American Sniper, Foxcatcher), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation, The Town).”
“Live By Night” will have a limited theatrical release on Christmas day in the US to qualify for awards season, followed by a wide release 13th January 2017.
