When much-derided director Paul WS Anderson revealed that he was making a disaster movie, the jokes pretty much wrote themselves. “Well, of COURSE it’ll be a disaster.” Etc etc. As bad as it may turn out to be, TriStar Pictures has been marketing this with the confidence that it’ll do well at the Box Office. Their latest promotional piece is the poster below. If nothing else, the image seems to suggest that nothing brings out your fiery passions quite like an exploding volcano. Metaphor time!

Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the epic story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.”

“Pompeii” stars Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paz Vega, Jessica Lucas, Jared Harris and Kiefer Sutherland. It premieres 21st February 2014.
