The term “viral” is bandied about much too easily nowadays. You can’t really “do” a viral campaign, you can do a good piece of work, and then hope it goes viral through the net, or good ol’ word-of-mouth. Having said that, these new posters for the independent arthouse-ish film “Robot & Frank” are quite cool. And I’m doing my part to “viral” them out to you, dear reader. They focus on the titular robot, who in the story serves as a companion to an old ex-convict. In Japan, this is already happening, as robotic domestic help slowly starts to fill in the blanks left by humans unwilling to take on the burden…

And here’s the official one-sheet poster…

Here’s the synopsis: “Robot & Frank, the feature film debut of commercial director Jake Schreier, was a festival favorite at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it world premiered and was co-winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and somewhat heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places.”

“Robot & Frank” stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeremy Sisto, and Jeremy Strong. It premieres 17th August in limited release in the US.
