Actors losing lots of weight for their roles is no new thing. Jake Gyllenhaal now joins the ranks of Christian Bale and Matthew McConnaughey for his latest film “Nightcrawler”. But no matter how many times you see it, it’s still alarming. The guy looks horrifically gaunt and bug-eyed like a heroin addict here, which of course is in keeping with his character, a desperate man who chases a dream of fame and fortune only to see it slowly consume him from the inside out. Looks pretty interesting, and although I’m not a high fan of Gyllenhaal’s acting, his recent work like “Prisoners” and “Enemy” have turned me around.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.”
“Nightcrawler” stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmad. It premieres 17th October in the US.
