Independent film festivals aren’t places where you’d expect to discover science-fiction. But you’d be surprised. The latest example is “Robot & Frank”, a charming story of friendship between a retiree… and a robot. Frank Langella stars in the title role, and he’s always great to watch. You might remember him more as a heavy dramatic actor, in films like “Frost/Nixon”. This is a decidedly much more light-hearted project for him, and one of his few forays into sci-fi. The rest of the cast is pretty solid too, with Susan Sarandon and James Marsden providing support. That droid looks suspiciously like Honda’s Asimo though…

Here’s the official synopsis: “Robot & Frank, the feature film debut of commercial director Jake Schreier, was a festival favorite at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it world premiered and was co-winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and somewhat heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places.”

“Robot & Frank” also stars Liv Tyler, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeremy Sisto, and Jeremy Strong It premieres 24th August in limited release in the US. Look for it here at your local DVD store.
