Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm promised to unveil the very first bit of footage for the highly-anticipated “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at Star Wars Celebration, and so they have. They also said it will be more like a full trailer, but on that front they didn’t quite deliver.

This is very much a teaser, albeit a wee bit longer. But as you know, it’s not the length, it’s what you do with it that counts. And here, there is a curious feeling of “not quite”. I mean, this is still a good trailer, and there are a number of scenes that give me chills — that wide shot of the training, those new vehicles kicking up red dust on a barren planet, that last line of Luke’s. But I guess it was lacking some of the magic that came in spades with the first teaser for “The Force Awakens”.

Still, it does provides tonnes of discussion material. What does Luke mean? The popular theory out there is that he discovered the secrets of the Force from his search for the ancient Jedi temples, and it’s something that will shake the foundations of the Jedi beliefs to their core. That maybe true “balance” in the Force means even the good guys need to be kept out of the equation.

There will be more footage to come in time, but for now this is gonna be endlessly dissected for months on end.

Here’s some basic info on the sequel: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.”

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” premieres 15th December.
