Banks and financial market manipulators have sort of become the new Big Bad of the 21st Century, what with the countless lives they destroyed in the global economic crisis of 2005. A movie about it is so ripe for drama I’m surprised there hasn’t been more films like “The Big Short”. This one boasts a hot ensemble cast who between them have three Oscar wins and a whole bunch of nominations. The director is a bit of a surprise though, since Adam McKay is known more for his comedies (“Anchorman”, “The Other Guys”). Watching this trailer, I’m getting a somewhat playful, almost fun vibe to the story of how a bunch of guys turned a dire situation to their advantage. Awards bait? Perhaps.
Here’s the official synopsis: “When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (“The Blind Side,” “Moneyball”), and directed by Adam Mckay (“Anchorman,” “Step Brothers”) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.”
“The Big Short” stars Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, Melissa Leo, Brad Pitt, Rafe Spall, Tracy Letts, John Magaro, Jeremy Strong, Byron Mann, Finn Wittrock, and Hamish Linklater. It premieres 23rd December in the US.
