Looks like Christopher Nolan won’t be the only guy with a film this year featuring the World War II evacuation of Dunkirk. Brit comedy-drama “Their Finest” will beat it to the punch. Based on Lissa Evans’ 2009 novel, the STX Entertainment production takes a look at war propaganda films, and the people who made them. In this instance, a woman, played by former Bond girl Gemma Arterton.
A trailer has just dropped, and it comes off as more of a comedy than anything serious, especially with the likes of the always awesome Bill Nighy hamming it up. Could be a fun watch.
Here’s the official synopsis: “With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry of Information as a “slop” scriptwriter charged with bringing “a woman’s touch” to morale-boosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) whose path would never have crossed hers in peacetime. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and a colorful crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation. Although Catrin’s artist husband looks down on her job, she quickly discovers there is as much camaraderie, laughter and passion behind the camera as there is onscreen.”
“Their Finest” is directed by BAFTA-nominated director Lone Scherfig (“An Education”), and written by British TV vet Gaby Chiappe (“EastEnders”), and stars Gemma Arterton (“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”), Sam Claflin (“The Hunger Games: Mockingly”) and Bill Nighy (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”). It premieres 7th April in the US. No word on a local release.
