20th Century Fox has been doing a damn fine job with their rebooted “Planet Of The Apes” series. The two films that have already come out were great, and now it looks like returning director Matt Reeves (continuing from “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes”) has another winner lined up for us. Everything that we’ve seen so far of “War For The Planet Of The Apes” has ranged from cool to flat-out awesome, and this latest trailer kicks things into even higher gear. We see the full scope of the titular showdown between the apes, led by Caesar, and what’s left of mankind, led by a military man. Woody Harrelson looks like he’ll be a delight in a Colonel Kurtz-like role (from “Apocalypse Now” in case you didn’t know). I’m intrigued by the child, whose mute nature and name (she’s billed as “Nova” in the production notes) is an homage to a character from the 1968 original, as well as a strong hint at mankind’s eventual fate. I am pumped for this.

Here’s the official synopsis: “In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter in the rebooted take on the enduring science fiction franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.”

“War For The Planet Of The Apes” is directed by Matt Reeves, and also stars Steve Zahn (“Captain Fantastic”), Terry Notary (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”) and Karin Konoval (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”). It premieres 14th July.
